It had all the glitz and glamour of a Hollywood Awards party; all that was missing was those little statuettes of Oscar.
Last Friday night was Living Tenerife’s party night at the Buda Bar in Playa Las Américas. The celebrations were the well-earned reward for five years and fifty editions of Tenerife’s favourite lifestyle magazine.
We had Mumms champagne by the magnum; fabulous dresses and dazzling jewels; cool dudes and even cooler grooves. We even had speeches (thankfully no-one felt the need to burst into tears and gush embarrassingly) when Sean Coward and Enzo Testa thanked everyone concerned with the success of Living Tenerife and reminded us how it all began; with Sean’s not-so-secret-weapon; the fabulous Mai Ling.
The red carpet was beginning to look somewhat threadbare by the time 600 pairs of shoes had made their way down it but I seriously doubt that anyone leaving Buda Bar in the early hours of Saturday would even have noticed if the carpet was still there…Mumm’s the word!

1I am a frequent visitor to the Canary Islands, my wife is from Lanzarote.
I love the Canarian folklore but after a while I will invariably seek out some good old fashioned British or American folk.
You may think this would be easy to find amongst the bars and night clubs of the many English quarters around Tenerife but I rarely find anything which appeals.
I am in my forties and enjoy the haunting and sentimental sounds of Mary Hopkins, Simon and Garfunkel, basically something with a sing along or hum along theme; I love some popular Spanish stuff also. Most importantly I want to listen to someone with a good voice and someone who can pluck.
I discovered a guy called Manuel Negrin Pololo, tall, annoyingly handsome chap who plays the acoustic. He is of course Spanish. He has played at the Buho Club and others in the la Laguna area and indeed across Tenerife and Lanzarote.
I would describe his voice as a cross between Julio Iglesias and J. Sabina. His voice is very much his own however and I think he is great in a modest way.
I met him a few years ago and we chatted about music in general. He has a great knowledge of popular and classical English and American folk, his accent only adds to the charm.
For anyone on holiday or living in Tenerife I would recommend him for a great evening out.
