When it comes to religious festivals, it’s easy nowadays to lose sight of what they’re supposed to be about.
in the UK, Christmas has become a time for economists to benchmark the strength of consumer spending as shops look forward to their busiest season of the year and Easter is the pinnacle of sales for confectionary as every brand of sweetie and every cartoon character makes its way into an Easter Egg box.
But on Tenerife, consumerism still takes a back seat to religious devotion on these important dates in the Catholic calendar.
On Holy Friday, the former capital city of San Cristóbal de La Laguna holds the most spiritual of the island’s Easter processions.
In the March issue of Living Tenerife, through haunting images and atmospheric prose, Jack takes us along with him to witness the Procesión Magna and presents us with a beautifully crafted reminder of what Easter is really all about.

2Hi Anna,
Both processions start from the Iglesia de Concepcion. The Magna Procession starts at 5 pm and the Procession of Silence starts at 9.30 pm.
